Privacy policy

Last updated: 7 July 2026

The short version: almost everything you do in this app stays on your own phone. There is no account and no sign-in. The one time information leaves your device is when you choose to chat with Genevieve, the AI assistant, so that your message can be answered. We do not track you, show ads, or sell your information.

1. Who we are

This app, Imbue, is provided by Imbue ("we", "us"). This policy explains how we handle personal information, and we handle it in line with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 and its Information Privacy Principles.

The app supports people living with chronic illness through a calm, nervous-system approach to recovery. It is for general wellbeing and education. It is not a medical device, and it does not provide medical diagnosis or treatment.

2. Our approach to your privacy

The app is built to keep your information with you. By default, the things you write and save are stored only on your device, not on our servers. You do not create an account, and you are not asked to identify yourself.

3. Information stored on your device

The following is kept locally on your phone, under your control, and is not sent to us:

Some of this may include health information, which is sensitive. It stays on your device unless you choose to share it with Genevieve (see below). You can view, change, or delete this information at any time within the app, and clearing the app data or uninstalling removes it from your device.

4. Information processed when you use Genevieve

Genevieve is an AI assistant. When you choose to send her a message, that message, and the small set of memory notes she keeps, are sent securely over the internet to our server and on to a third-party AI provider so that a response can be generated and returned to you.

Because of this, please do not share anything with Genevieve that you would not want processed by a third party. We ask our AI provider not to use your content to train their models. The provider may hold the content briefly for security and abuse-prevention purposes before deleting it. Genevieve is an AI and can be wrong; she is not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Custom audio sessions are the one thing we keep a server copy of. When Genevieve writes and records a session for you, the recording and its script are stored under a random, anonymous identifier (never your name) solely so your sessions can be restored on a new phone and your monthly minutes counted fairly. Neither we nor any third party uses this content for anything else, and deleting a session in the app also deletes the server copy.

5. What we do not collect

To be clear, the app does not:

6. How we use information

We use the information only to provide the app and the features you ask for: to show you your own content, to generate Genevieve's responses when you message her, and to deliver the reminders you set up. Reminders are scheduled on your device.

7. Storage, security, and backups

Information on your device is protected by your phone's own security. Information sent to Genevieve travels over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection. If you create a backup, it is an encrypted file that you save and control; we never receive it.

8. Other organisations involved

A small number of trusted providers help us run the parts of the app that need the internet. They process information only to provide their service to us:

These providers operate internationally, so information sent to Genevieve may be processed on servers outside New Zealand. Where that happens we take reasonable steps, as required by the Privacy Act, to ensure your information is handled with comparable protections. This list may change as the app grows, and we will update this policy when it does.

9. Links to recommended books

Some lessons include an optional "Further reading" link to a recommended book on Amazon. These are referral (affiliate) links: if you buy something through one, we may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you. You never have to use them, and they do not affect what the app costs you.

Tapping one of these links opens Amazon in your browser or the Amazon app. We do not share any of your information with Amazon. Once you are on their site, Amazon's own privacy policy and terms apply, not ours.

10. Your rights

Under the Privacy Act 2020 you have the right to ask for access to, and correction of, the personal information we hold about you. Because nearly all of your information lives on your own device, you can already see and change it directly in the app, including asking Genevieve to update or forget what she remembers. For anything processed through Genevieve that you cannot reach yourself, contact us using the details below and we will help.

11. Keeping information, and deleting it

Information stored on your device is kept until you delete it or uninstall the app. The app gives you ways to clear your reading history and to reset or erase your data. Messages processed by Genevieve are held only briefly by our AI provider, as described above, and are then deleted.

12. Children

The app is intended for adults managing their own health and wellbeing. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 16.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it last changed. Significant changes will be made clear within the app.

14. Contact and complaints

If you have any questions about this policy or about your information, please contact Imbue at hello@withimbue.com.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you have the right to complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner in New Zealand, at privacy.org.nz.
